“I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.” – Matthew 10:34 (13.7. 2025)

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

“I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.” – Matthew 10:34

The words of Jesus in today’s Gospel may come as a surprise to many of us. Jesus is often seen as the Prince of Peace. Yet today, through the Gospel, He declares: “I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.” These words call us to go deeper in our reflection and understand the profound meaning behind them.

1. Conflict that Leads to True Peace

The “sword” that Jesus refers to is not a physical weapon meant for violence. Rather, it symbolizes the inner strength and conviction required to live by the truth.
When someone chooses to follow Christ wholeheartedly, it often leads to conflicts within families and communities, because living according to God's Word may go against the values or expectations of others.
To follow Christ is to reject false peace and walk the path of truth and righteousness, even if it causes division.

2. Priority to Truth and to Christ

Jesus says that those who love their father, mother, son, or daughter more than Him are not worthy of Him.
He is not asking us to hate our families, but rather to place Him first above all relationships.
Discipleship may sometimes demand painful sacrifices, but in the end, it leads to lasting joy and true meaning in life.

3. Rejoicing Even in Loss

Jesus teaches us:

“Whoever seeks to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for My sake will find it.”

This is a life-giving principle for every Christian. When we surrender ourselves for the sake of Christ, even our daily journey becomes a walk with the Cross.
Though challenging, it is a path that helps us experience the abiding presence of the Lord in a deeper way.

4. Every Little Act Has Meaning

At the end of today’s Gospel, Jesus says:

“Whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is a disciple will not lose his reward.”

This reminds us that no act of kindness or service done for Christ is ever too small. Even the simplest gestures carry eternal value in the eyes of God.

Conclusion:

Dear friends, following Christ is not always easy. It involves sacrifice, courage, and commitment. But it is the only path that leads us to true peace, fulfillment, and eternal life.
So let us take up our cross, place Jesus first in our lives, and pray for the grace to live according to His teachings.

With love and prayers,
