“We Are Called to Repent...”

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

In today’s Gospel, it may seem as though Jesus is speaking in anger. But this is not the anger of vengeance — rather, it is a holy indignation that arises when people fail to recognize the call of God and live accordingly.

We hear Jesus say,
“On the day of judgment, it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon than for you.”
These strong words are addressed to the towns of Chorazin, Bethsaida, and Capernaum — places where Jesus performed many mighty works. Yet the people there failed to repent. Jesus is not condemning them out of hatred, but out of love — calling them, and us, to turn away from our indifference and return to God’s grace.

Today’s Word of God reminds us to recall all the blessings we have received from the Lord. Even when we fail to live in ways pleasing to God — through our words or actions — the Lord never withholds His grace. He continues to bless us day by day with food to eat, clothes to wear, shelter to live in, and good friends to accompany us.

As people who have received countless blessings from God, we are invited to reflect:
Have we truly shaped our lives according to His Word?

Though God has repeatedly invited us to repent, many have ignored that call and continued to live their own way. Yet today’s Gospel shows us that God still reaches out, still speaks to His people — just as He once spoke to the people of those towns.

He speaks to you today.
He speaks to me.

Let us listen to His voice with a grateful heart. Even if we have failed in the past, let us now remember His goodness, repent sincerely, and walk faithfully with Jesus every day. May the Lord bless us and strengthen us always in His love.

With love and prayers,
Rev. J. Sahaya Raj
